PHNX Announces Official Radio Release of Lose Myself on World Poetry Day –
A Lyrical Odyssey of Self-Discovery

In celebration of World Poetry Day, international trip-hop duo PHNX officially releases Lose Myself to radio stations worldwide, completing a deeply personal trilogy of transformation and healing.

Rap as Poetry – A Tradition of Storytelling and Reflection

Recognizing rap as a modern evolution of poetry, PHNX releases Lose Myself on World Poetry Day to honor the profound lyrical artistry behind hip-hop. AERIK KYLO, the poetic voice of PHNX, reflects on the power of words:

“Great rap lyrics are food for the mind and soul. As a teenager, I realized music wasn’t just about beats and melodies but about words with meaning—intelligent, poetic, and transformative. My greatest influences, from Q-Tip’s positivity to GZA’s wisdom, shaped how I write today. Rap is street poetry, and poetry has always been the language of transformation.”

This deep connection to poetry runs in his blood—AERIK KYLO is a direct descendant of the 17th-century German poet Johann Rist. However, while his ancestor’s poetry was religious, AERIK KYLO’s work is spiritual yet secular, using words to explore healing, self-discovery, and personal evolution. His lyrical style also draws from Norse skaldic poetry, an ancient Viking tradition where poetry was considered a divine gift from Odin, the god of wisdom, poetry, and storytelling.

AERIK KYLO’s Viking heritage is deeply rooted in his artistic identity. His given name is that of Viking kings. However, his parents originally planned to name him after Snorre Sturlasson, the greatest Viking poet. He chose to take on AERIK KYLO as his artist name, reflecting his artistic and spiritual journey. For KYLO, poetry was the highest art form in Norse culture, and the role of Odin as the god of poetry serves as a powerful inspiration in his work.

The Final Chapter: A Trilogy of Healing

Lose Myself is the resolution of PHNX’s previous releases, which chronicle a journey of mental health and transformation:

  • Save Me – The haunting debut single featuring Aarti Venkat, capturing the raw struggle of depression.

  • The Shadow (EP) – A three-track exploration of shadow work, confronting unresolved trauma, and integrating the darker aspects of the self.

  • Lose Myself – The conclusion, embracing self-acceptance, healing, and transformation.

Built around an atmospheric piano loop and lo-fi beats, Lose Myself blends melancholic and uplifting elements, crafting a hypnotic trip-hop meditation on self-discovery. The song’s lyrics embody a powerful mantra of personal growth:

“I had to lose myself to find myself,
And find myself to love myself,
And love myself to heal myself—
I had to lose my way to find my strength.”

Cover Art: A Visual Representation of Poetry and Transformation

The Lose Myself cover art reflects the song’s deeply introspective nature. It captures AERIK KYLO in the act of writing in his poetry book, the very place where lyrics take shape before they transform into music. Scattered around him is a crystal grid, symbolizing energy alignment, clarity, and intention—echoing the personal and spiritual journey embedded in his words. The warm candlelight and atmospheric shadows create an intimate setting, reinforcing the raw, meditative essence of the track.

A Cinematic Music Video in the Arctic

Accompanying the release is a breathtaking music video, filmed in the remote wilderness of Lofoten, Norway. AERIK KYLO performs atop a mountain, overlooking the vast Norwegian Sea—a striking symbol of expansiveness and self-discovery. Interwoven with these scenes are shots of KYLO journeying through untouched Arctic landscapes, mirroring the song’s introspective themes.

A Cross-Continental Collaboration of Sound and Soul

The creation of Lose Myself spanned two continents. Vishnu Prakash, PHNX’s co-founder, produced the song’s initial demo in Kerala, India, infusing it with a meditative quality. Upon hearing it, AERIK KYLO immediately resonated with its atmosphere, developing it further musically and crafting its deeply introspective lyrics in the Arctic solitude of Lofoten.

“This song carries esoteric and spiritual references that were essential in my healing journey,” KYLO shares. “Through solitude in nature, studying spirituality, shamanism, and psychology, I pieced myself back together. The lyrics are an honest reflection of that process.”

About 'Lose Myself'

A deeply personal journey through shadow and light, Lose Myself by PHNX is a hypnotic trip-hop meditation on self-discovery, healing, and inner strength. Built around an atmospheric piano loop and a super chill beat, the song is both melancholic and uplifting—an intimate conversation between past wounds and newfound resilience.

With a spoken, reflective delivery reminiscent of Karmacoma by Massive Attack and Where My Mind is At by Skitz & Roots Manuva, PHNX unfolds a lyrical odyssey that traces the Hero’s Journey of the self. From battling inner darkness to embracing the unknown, the track captures the discomfort of healing and the serenity found in surrender:

“I had to lose myself to find myself,

And find myself to love myself,

And love myself to heal myself—

I had to lose my way to find my strength.”

The song’s verses weave rich, symbolic imagery—standing as a lighthouse keeper against the dark, planting jasmine seeds in blind faith, walking the lonely but necessary path of self-discovery. The tension between fear and freedom plays out through PHNX’s introspective vocals, creating a soundscape that feels both timeless and cinematic.

Conceived across two distant landscapes—its demo crafted in Kerala, India, by Vishnu, and its final form completed in the Arctic Lofoten Islands by AERIK KYLO—Lose Myself is PHNX’s most pure trip-hop creation to date. It is a raw and vulnerable offering, an invitation to embrace one’s own journey, and a reminder that true strength is found in the willingness to face oneself completely.

PHNX Announce Dark and Powerful New EP “The Shadow”

International trip-hop duo PHNX return with their haunting and deeply introspective new EP, “The Shadow”, set for radio and digital release on all platforms on 2 December 2024. The three-track EP marks an evolution in PHNX’s sound and thematic exploration, diving into the depths of human psychology through the lens of shadow work — confronting the darkest and unconscious parts of oneself to heal and grow.

Following the success of their debut single “Save Me”, which explored the struggles of depression, “The Shadow” delves even deeper into raw emotional territory, addressing personal fears, unresolved trauma, and the integration of the shadow self.

Exploring the Shadow: A Journey Through Darkness

“The Shadow” is inspired by shadow work, a psychological concept popularized by Carl Jung, which involves confronting the hidden aspects of one’s personality—fears, shame, and past pain—to achieve healing and self-integration. Lead member AERIK KYLO describes the EP as “a process of facing my fears, looking into pain and trauma from the past, and addressing it head-on rather than running away from it.”

The EP comprises three deeply personal tracks, each shedding light on different aspects of shadow work:

  • “Where Were You”: A haunting narrative from the perspective of an abandoned boy and his sister, this song touches on themes of neglect, loneliness, and unmet needs. The lyrics ask painful questions about absent parents, drawing from real-life stories of abandonment. With its more melodic take on a trip-hop & dubstep fusion, Where Were You speaks directly to the heartbreak of lost childhood innocence.

  • “On The Other Side”: A melancholic reflection on death and the loss of a loved one, this track explores the emotional pain and sorrow of saying goodbye. Through reflections on past relationships, "On The Other Side" grapples with grief, regret, and ultimately gratitude for personal growth. AERIK KYLO’s rap is complemented by Aarti Venkat’s tender vocals, creating a powerful juxtaposition of vulnerability and strength. The trip-hop song’s dubstep-inspired sound pays homage to the early UK dubstep scene, drawing from artists like Benga and Skream.

  • “Sacred Anger”: This track taps into the complexity of anger —specifically, the anger directed at divisive religious ideology and its role in perpetuating fear, social control, and violence. While the lyrics suggest a confrontation with systems of oppression, the song ultimately raises questions about the cycle of violence and whether true change can be achieved through such means. AERIK KYLO seeks to find acceptance of his anger, as an integral part of the human experience. Musically, it retains PHNX’s signature trip-hop sound, infused with rougher dubstep elements to heighten the intensity of its message.

A Unique Collaborative Process Across Continents

Just like their previous work, “The Shadow” EP was created remotely, as band members Vishnu Prakash and AERIK KYLO worked across great geographic distances—over 8,000 kilometers, spanning from Kerala, India to the Lofoten Islands, Norway. The production process saw Vishnu laying down instrumental tracks in the tropical climate of Kerala, while AERIK completed the compositions and recorded vocals in the Arctic region of Lofoten. Collaborator Aarti Venkat again lent her mesmerizing voice, recording her parts in Dubai, making the EP a truly international endeavor.

AERIK KYLO remarks on their refined workflow: “We’ve found a sound we both really love, so we no longer need to spend time figuring that out—we can just dive into the music. It’s a seamless process now.”

Sound: A Darker, Rougher Evolution

“The Shadow” marks an evolution from PHNX’s earlier work. While still rooted in the dark, melancholic trip-hop sound reminiscent of Massive Attack and Lamb, the EP incorporates darker and rougher elements of UK dubstep, particularly influenced by the early works of Benga and Skream. The tracks are raw, gritty, and emotionally charged, yet maintain a delicate balance between vulnerability and aggression.

“The foundation of our sound is still trip-hop, but this time we’ve added an edge—both lyrically and musically,” says AERIK KYLO. The combination of trip-hop’s atmospheric depth with stripped-down dubstep elements provides a compelling sonic journey for listeners.

A Deep Dive into Human Psychology

At its core, “The Shadow” is a testament to the power of self-reflection and healing. AERIK KYLO hopes that his honest approach to confronting his shadow side will inspire others to engage in their own shadow work: “This process was intense and painful, but necessary. I’ve come out feeling more complete, and more comfortable in my own skin. My hope is that our music can encourage others to face their own shadows and find healing through it.”

The EP ties into PHNX’s overarching mission of addressing mental health and personal healing through music. As AERIK KYLO reflects on his journey, he emphasizes that shadow work has allowed him to step up as the protector and cheerleader for his inner child, embracing his own power with a new sense of self-ownership.

Release and Availability

“The Shadow” will be available for streaming and purchase on all major digital platforms globally, including Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Tidal, and more, starting on 2 December 2024. The EP will also be distributed to radio stations worldwide.

PHNX Unveils Debut Single "Save Me" on World Mental Health Day

PHNX, the international duo comprising artist & producer AERIK KYLO and musician/producer Vishnu Prakash, released their debut single, "Save Me", on World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2024. This introspective Trip-Hop track features the haunting vocals of Aarti Venkat (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) and offers a deep, emotional exploration of depression

"Save Me" is much more than just a song—it's a project born from personal experience and research, designed to raise awareness about mental health struggles. Drawing from conversations with friends, family, and their own battles, PHNX composed this song to evoke the emotional weight of depression, with the hope of normalizing discussions around mental health.

Extraordinary Remote Collaboration

Recorded in isolation across three different locations in the United Arab Emirates—Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai—during the COVID-19 pandemic, "Save Me" was produced and arranged in a manner as unique as its message. The rap vocals by AERIK KYLO, instrumentation by Vishnu Prakash, and the sung vocals by Aarti Venkat came together in an extraordinary remote collaboration. After recording the track in the Arabian desert, the track was mixed and mastered in the Arctic, in a 200-year-old rorbu (traditional fisherman’s cabin) on the Lofoten Islands, Norway.

Production Mirroring Symptoms of Depression

With sonic inspiration from Massive Attack's "Protection" and Lamb's "Debut" albums, the song mirrors the experience of depression, gradually stripping away its musical layers, much like how depression dulls the world around us. As the song progresses, the rhythm, structure, and even the vibrancy of the sound itself fade, leaving listeners with a deep sense of melancholy and reflection.

AERIK KYLO explains the inspiration behind the song: "When working on the project, we started out by researching people's subjective experiences

with depression. I found it very reassuring to learn that so many people have actually experienced depression at some point, and that we all pretty much experience it the exact same way. People describe depression as a feeling of meaninglessness, and with a lack of passion for things they ordinarily love. Creatively, they describe the color associated with it as gray, and the sound as 'the absence of sound.'”

AERIK KYLO adds, "I've been humbled by the fantastic response to the song online, as it is the most honest and personal song I've written, and it organically has reached about 20,000 streams on YouTube Music alone."

Release and Availability

"Save Me" is available globally on all streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. PHNX hopes to connect with listeners who have experienced depression, offering them reassurance, and with those who seek to better understand what their loved ones may be going through.

---

This release aligns with World Mental Health Day to encourage important conversations about mental health and to destigmatize the experience of depression. While there are no live performances planned, the duo continues to collaborate virtually from their bases of stunning natural beauty and serenity - in Lofoten, Norway (known as The World's Most Beautiful Islands), and Kerala, India (known as God's Own Country).

Lyrics

The lyrics to 'Save Me' by PHNX, featuring rap by AERIK KYLO and sung vocals by Aarti Venkat.

'Save Me'

(V. Prakash / H. Rist)

Winter came.

She brought ice cold winter rain.

(Winter Rain)

Still, I felt no stinging pain;

Only self-loathing and shame.

All the leaves fell by her rain.

(Fell by her rain.)

But I still don’t know her name.

(Don’t know her name.)

Colors faded to numbing grey.

Autumn rain turned to winter haze.

(Winter haze.)

I’m in a prison of my own making;

Taking notes, as I listen to my heart breaking.

Faking smiles, as I’m feeling all my thoughts break me.

Tell me maybe there’s no meaning to it all, save me.

(Save Me)

Where is the person I used to know?

I watched you learn, I watched you grow.

Where did you go?

Where did you go?

Where is the person I used to know?

I watched you learn, I watched you grow.

Where did you go?

Where did you go?

Nobody knows what I'm going through.

It's all inside, but it's shining through.

Nobody knows what I'm going through.

It's all inside, but it's shining through.

My days are gray. My days are pain.

My days are gray.

My days are gray. My days are pain.

Why even bother? It's all the same...

I'm in a prison of my own making;

Taking notes as I listen to my heart breaking.

I'm in a prison of my own making;

Tell me maybe there's no meaning to it all...

Save me.

Where is the person I used to know?

I watched you learn, I watched you grow.

Where did you go?

Where did you go?

Where is the person I used to know?

I watched you leave, as you watched me fall.

Where did you go?

Where did you go?
